me and my thoughts.
Today at Grebel we met a candidate for the Anabaptist History professor position. We all introduced ourselves to Martin, the candidiate.
Amanda: Hi, I’m Amanda, I’m mainly interested in youth and child ministry, and my undergraduate degree is in Recreation and Leisure studies.
Martin: What?!
Amanda: Recreation and Leisure studies.
Martin: Your degree is in what??Amanda, everyone knows you can’t get a degree in having fun.
I like this guy.
A well-written, thinly-disguised parable about business.
“All users of ‘uw-wireless’ should switch to using ‘eduroam’, as soon as possible, to avoid disruption in service. ‘eduroam’ offers a higher level of security, and can be used at other participating universities in Canada.”—
I am amused by the fact that this is now being portrayed as a significant security problem, when for years the official answer was that it wasn’t worth the overhead to encrypt wireless connections, and that users should be using secure versions of websites anyway. I actually think that the reasoning at the time was sound (WEP is easily cracked, WPA wasn’t widely available as an encryption method, and encryption slows down the connection, thus encryption isn’t worth it), but it’s funny how we ignore security issues like this because we don’t have a better answer, and then raise alarm bells as soon as we do.

I want this.
I was there!
This is the Face of a Peace Activist, not a threat to public safety.
Joshua Enns is released from Eastern Ave. detention centre on Monday, June 28, 2010. (Photo by Tannis Toohey/Toronto Star) Joshua Enns says he was at a prayer vigil and David Breed says he was out for a walk when both were arrested yesterday and found themselves at the Eastern Ave. detention centre. Both had pocket knives on them and face concealed weapons charges. Enns, who is studying to be a math student, says he was strip searched and moved from cell to cell, unable to talk to a lawyer. He was “passing peace” to officers on the front lines when four officers took him into custody. He was wearing a black T-shirt that reads, “Peace.” He says he was driven around for hours and spent five hours in pain because he had to pee. “I hope this is cleared up so I’ll be able to teach,” he says. He says he uses is dollar-store knife to cut fruit. Breed, a security guard at Molson Amphitheatre, says he and his girlfriend were watching the bike rally and thinking about brunch when he was taken into custody. His girlfriend, waiting outside the detention centre for him, had lawyers numbers scrawled in her arm. (via G20 — Toronto 2010

It’s an exciting week coming up. Two presentations (and a red t-shirt as part of the deal).
