My Tuesday so far
1:30 AM: Get home from airport after delayed flight.
2:30 AM: Actually get to sleep.
7:00 AM: Alarm goes off.
8:15 AM: At the gym. Stretch for an hour.
9:15 AM: An hour of ridiculously intense personal training with weighted bars and fixed weights.
I’m not sure I’ll be able to lift my arms above my head tomorrow, but it felt good to get right back into things.
We owe it to the protesters who marched peacefully, holding up signs with which...

Sandwiches without a plan
Lately, I’ve been in the habit of going to my local Safeway at lunchtime on Saturdays and getting a sandwich at their deli. The sandwiches are made-to-order, so I can get exactly what I want, and the ingredients tend to be of better quality than Subway. The sandwiches are quite good, but making them isn’t a quick process, particularly because they have to be heated.
Today, when I...
Today was one of those days
…where I didn’t really have a plan for the day. My response was to bike to church, and then afterwards, start biking towards a bridge across the San Francisco Bay and then haphazardly try to find my way back using only the hills at the edges of the Santa Clara Valley as waypoints. 64 miles and a few dead-ends later, I made it home. Next time, I think I’ll at least look at a map...
Conference Finals Picks
#3 PHX vs. #8 LAK: LAK in 6
#1 NYR vs. #6 NJD: NYR in 6
Of course, to this point, I’m 5 for 12 in picking series winners, so if you’re going to bet at all, you should probably bet against my picks.
A letter
I got a letter in the mail today from my health insurance company. They have apparently noticed that I’ve been receiving treatment for an injury, and essentially wanted to know if someone else was responsible for my injury so that they could get their insurance company to pay my medical bills. I learn new things about the US health care system every day.
I went running in Central Park this morning
No big deal.
Today
I feel like there’s little to remark on about my day today. Get up, stretch, work, work, work, work, watch hockey, run, go to bed.
On the plus side, I let myself go on my longest run in quite a while — six miles — and I felt good the whole way. Also on the plus side, I leave tomorrow night to go to New York for a few days.
Yup. That’s pretty much it.

One of those days
I didn’t feel like getting any exercise today. I was tired and sore, which may have had something to do with sleeping in an airport overnight and on a plane the night before that. But probably not.
I’d like to say that it was my deep determination that got me off the couch where the NHL playoffs beckoned and into my running shoes. But the sad truth is that I left my bike at work on...
My hastily-picked round 2 NHL playoff predictions
Given that I’ve been away since Friday, I haven’t had a chance to post my second round playoff predictions yet. Never fear, these were picked and entered into the NHL’s bracket challenge. With no explanation, here they are:
Eastern Conference
NYR (1) vs. WSH (7): New York in 7.
PHI (5) vs. NJD (6): Philadelphia in 6.
Western Conference
STL (2) vs. LAK (8): St. Louis in 6.

On a jet plane
I’m on a plane to LA at the moment. We took off late enough that I’ve already missed my connection to Denver, so I’m going to be on airplanes pretty much all night. It’s all an adventure, though!
I just touched my hands to my toes with my legs straight for the first time in many years.
I got soaked biking home from work today. I didn’t really care. True story.
Unrelated: ever feel like you’re pushing really hard at something, but the results just aren’t coming? I’ve decided that it’s a sign I need to step back, re-evaluate the situation, and adjust my approach.
Also unrelated: thumbs up on my first personal training session. I have a physical...
If you’ve talked to me in the past few years, you probably know that I’ve taken up long-distance running pretty seriously since finishing school. You may also know that I hurt myself running back in November.
This isn’t my first time being injured — I got shin splints slightly more than a year before this current injury — but this one was a bigger deal, in a lot of ways. For...
So, uh, I haven’t posted here in a while. I may not post here again for a while after this. We’ll see how it goes.
I had a pretty awesome weekend. The best in a long time, in fact, and it didn’t take doing anything outlandish to make it that way. I spent Saturday watching hockey while cleaning my apartment, something that I’ve put off for far too long. There’s just...

I’ve gone from writing cookie-cutter cover letters in an attempt to get co-op interviews to reading cookie-cutter cover letters from students hoping that I’ll give them a co-op interview. Things have come full circle.

On self-improvement
New Year’s resolutions are a strange beast. The self-reflection that the passing of another year brings causes us to vow to change ourselves into better people. This year, we think, will be the year where we will become the people that we want to be.
Unfortunately, while our intentions are good, we treat major life changes as things that we can make happen if we just try hard enough. So...

Lifestyle Inflation
I’ve been trying to make do with the flaky, slow WiFi at my apartment complex, and I can’t take it anymore. So I’m looking at other options. The only two choices in my complex are AT&T and Comcast. If you sign up for AT&T DSL, the prices are such that a package with home phone service is pretty much the same price. It’s the same thing with Comcast: once you sign...

EXHAUSTED
willards:
but so in love with California’s coast (not so much the inland).
The coast was beautiful, but the inland was more exciting. What more could you ask for than a drive in total darkness on a ridiculously windy road through the mountains, while dodging deer at every turn?
We're waiting in Calgary
willards:
on our way to San Francisco! Unfortunately, they just made an announcement that our flight is delayed for an hour. Stinkers. At least there is free Wifi.
See you soon!
